The science isn’t new, but the technology is: Lumen uses a CO2 sensor and flow meter to determine the CO2 concentration in a single breath. This indicates the type of fuel your body is using to produce energy.
The Lumen was designed by twin sisters Michal and Merav Mor, both with PhDs in physiology. They were looking for an easy way to track their metabolism during training for an Ironman race, and they created a small Bluetooth-connected device that measures the CO2 concentration in your breath and determines if your body is burning fat or carbs. At first glance, the Lumen kind of resembles a vape pen, which could make it go almost unnoticed if you were measuring your breath in the public.
