MICHELIN Uptis - TAKE THE AIR OUT OF TIRES

MICHELIN Uptis - TAKE THE AIR OUT OF TIRES

MICHELIN Uptis Type:

Automotive / Tires & Wheels / Airless tires

MICHELIN Uptis Description:

THE FIRST AIRLESS MOBILITY SOLUTION FOR PASSENGER VEHICLES

The MICHELIN® Uptis (Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System) is an airless mobility solution for passenger vehicles, which reduces the risk of flat tires and other air loss failures that result from punctures or road hazards.

200 million tires scrapped each year could be addressed by Uptis—that's the equivalent of the weight of 200 Eiffel Towers

MICHELIN Uptis Features:

  • Drivers of passenger vehicles feel safer on the road.
  • Operators of passenger vehicle fleets minimize downtime and improve efficiency resulting from flat tires and near-zero levels of maintenance.
  • Society at large benefits from extraordinary environmental savings through reduced use of raw materials for replacement tire or spare tire production.

Is MICHELIN Uptis good:

Michelin's Uptis is an airless car tire that won't ever get a flat.

The company is partnering with GM to offer tires on certain vehicles starting as early as 2024.

Because you don’t have to worry about tire punctures or underinflation that leads to early wear, Michelin says that the Uptis could last up to three times as long as a regular tire. More than 200 million tires head to the scrapyard every year due to these issues, according to the company. Hopefully, the longer lifespan won’t mean Michelin charges more for them. Tires are already expensive enough, and environmental messaging won’t be enough for many to buy them if they cost significantly more than conventional tires.

Airless tire on Wikipedia:

Airless tires, non-pneumatic tires (NPT), or flat-free tires are tires that are not supported by air pressure. They are used on some small vehicles such as riding lawn mowers and motorized golf carts. They are also used on heavy equipment such as backhoes, which are required to operate on sites such as building demolition, where the risk of tire punctures is high. Tires composed of closed-cell polyurethane foam are also made for bicycles and wheelchairs. They are also commonly found on wheelbarrows which may be used for yard work or construction.
